Parents meet with the director and staff to share information and review previous evaluations the child may have received from other healthcare or educational providers. Families are also welcome to take a tour of the facility and to observe. If we determine that we can be of help, a time is scheduled for the director and staff to work individually with the child to determine starting points of a customized instructional program.

The director determines the child's current skills in key areas of development:

Essential Skills (includes tasks from our applied behavioral analysis -ABA program)

Fine motor skills
  • reaching
  • grasping and releasing
  • in-hand manipulation
  • using tools
  • grasping pencils and crayons
  • drawing
  • handwriting

Organizing and integrating the senses for use
  • one’s sense of movement and balance (vestibular)
  • deep pressure touch (proprioceptive)
  • light touch (tactile)
  • vision
  • hearing and listening
  • body awareness
  • ability to think about then perform a motor task

Language
  • developing sound awareness
  • labeling nouns, behaviors and attributes
  • following directions and performing sequences
  • understanding and speaking in phrases and sentences
  • using language to express needs and wants

Regulating behavior (includes applied behavioral analysis - ABA)
  • expressing physical states, feelings and wants
  • developing social skills
  • controlling emotional responses
  • understanding and complying with rules and directions

Pre-Academic and Academic Skills (evaluated depending on age, grade, etc. using a combination of standardized and non-standardized measures)

Immediately after the evaluation, if time permits, the director meets with the parents for an interpretive. If the child has attended or will attend a preschool or elementary school in addition to our program, the director or student’s teacher at CI may also communicate with the school staff to gather more information. A signed permission to share information form is needed for this exchange.

A comprehensive report is then written complete with recommendations. The report is sent to the family for review. Once a family decides to enroll, a highly customized instructional program is developed for the child whether attending the 1:1 sessions or the weekday program.
